Pinnacle The Hustler - Planet Beyond

image

Now most wouldn’t picture a black man going to Asia to pursue a career in Hip Hop but that’s exactly what Pinnacle TheHustler is doing. The guy has 0% Korean blood in his system yet he’s making his way in the industry as an MC and also a radio host. And its not just with the locals but also catching notice of some people back on US soil.

The MC goes hard in Korea, especially through the fist half of the album. He cuts through the first several tracks with a signature flow and then his pace start to mellow out a bit (barely! hah) on the track “Just Like Gin.” In the second half of the album the radio host gets a bit more personal with tracks like “Apologies” and “Dear God.”

Overall, I have go to say I like the album. Each song provides a different sound and feel. He changes up his flow to keep your attention and displaying versatility on his part. It has a sound for almost anyone out there, from high energy to low, happy to sad. Definitely a solid piece of work and I’m looking forward to more of his work!

Here’s a video off his album, “Dear God.”

Throwback Status: Kanye West - Late Registration

image

This curious gem of an album is a masterpiece in its own right.  Kanye avoided the sophomore slump with this homerun.  Jon Brion’s eerie and epic touch on it really made it stand out from the crowd.  Guest spots from Adam Levine, Jamie Foxx, and Brandy had people turning heads.  You may have forgotten about some of these jams, but can we call it a throwback yet?

Not Ye’s usual style, the track “Drive Slow” goes best with a styrofoam cup of sprite and sizzurp a la Weezy, and even features Paul Wall (remember him?)   Kanye West’s first verse paints a really awesome picture of him looking up to someone as a kid, and is one of his most underrated.  His homie GLC alays goes in, and the video version has an added T.I. verse:

The “Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix)” still gives me the chills when I play it.  There’s just something so chilling about Shirley Bassey’s voice, and is definitely one of my favorite sample choices.  Jay-Z’s verse just kills everything - squashes the rumors of him falling out with Kanye, murders the beat, and of course, the competition.  Foreshadowing Watch the Throne 6 years before it happened…

Throwback Status: Like a finely aged cheese, Late Registration tastes just as good today as it did in ‘05, can still fit in the times and might even have grown on me.  Not yet a classic - but soon to be. Give it another few years, and it will be.

Good things come to those who wait, and according to Mannie Fresh , Kanye West ’s G.O.O.D. Music compilation  is “pretty close” to being finished. Still no word on an actual release date, but the former Cash Money hitmaker is excited about his sessions with Yeezy’s crew.

Popout

"The cool thing about G.O.O.D. Music is it’s a bunch of great ideas and I’m one of those ideas," he told MTV News on Thursday at the South by Southwest festival. "[Kanye’s] trying to find the most talented producers, most talented artists, put ‘em all in a room and say, ‘Go for it. Y’all energy, like whatever is creative to y’all.’ "

It all sounds pretty organic. “I just kinda went to the Watch the Throne concert. Word got back that I was in there and we linked up from there,” Fresh said about his and Kanye’s initial meeting. “Next thing you know, I was at his crib playing beats, [and] he was just like, ‘Dude I like mostly everything you played. Sign right here.’ “

It’s still unclear whether Fresh has actually signed on with G.O.O.D. Music, but he has clearly been putting in a lot of work with the team, which includes Yeezy, Big Sean, Pusha T and producer Hit-Boy. “The cool thing is, in hip-hop history, when have we ever got along? It’s a cool thing that we’re sitting at the table, all of us get along on one accord trying to make something great — G.O.O.D. Music,” Fresh said.

Much of the G.O.O.D. Music album is still shrouded in mystery. We know the crew has been recording in London, but beyond that there hasn’t been any information regarding an official album title or singles. “It’s pretty close, I would say it’s pretty close,” Mannie said about the LP’s expected completion date. “Songs phenomenal, everything. It’s an album that’s all over the place, it’s not just one thing. It’s not just that you’re gonna hear some Southern hip-hop or whatever. You’re gonna hear everything.”

Drake - Take Care Album Review

image

Drake aka Mr. Do Right And Kill Everything dropped his sophomore offering “Take Care” this past Tuesday.  If you’re looking for an ecclectic mix of Drizzy’s famous heart-strung-out ballads and IDGAF couplets over hard hitting southern style beats, then you’ve come to the right place.  For someone who’s been following him since he had “Room for Improvement”, he’s certainly grown and made his own sound and impact, regardless of what the haters have to say (and they have a lot to say).

Let’s get right into it.  We start off with a ballad, no surprises here.  I always feel like Drake must be 35,000 feet up in the air while writing, because it’s perfect music for cruising, even if you can’t afford your own G5 jet.  “Over My Dead Body” is classic Drake, subtle shots at his haters and braggadacio that says, “I’m confident, but not cocky. Alright kinda cocky I guess”.  He shouts out the fans who’ve been with him since “Comeback Season”, and drops gems like “Shoutout to Asian girls, let the lights dim sum”. Nice.

"Shot For me" is Drake crooning about a girl he misses, and how she feels like he’s different now because he’s famous.  Oh, the woes of having fame and fortune…but really, this pretty much puts into lyrics what I think about sometimes.  Love him or hate him, Drake makes music that is relatable to everyone on a certain level.  Although this jam is a bit slower, I still think it hits pretty hard. I like, and I can see this one blowing up.

"Headlines" has been out as a single for awhile, so I’ll keep it brief.  Besides the unbelievable "You gon’ make someone around me catch a body like that" which he even addresses in this interview, it’s a stellar song all around with a tough beat.  One of the best tracks - too bad it will be played out very soon…(or already is).

The Weeknd really kills it on this joint, and I think “Crew Love” is my favorite cut off the whole album.  Drake goes in and does his thing, while The Weeknd swoops in for the kill…There’s something about the beat that rivets me, from the eccentric pounding of the drums that come sporadically, to the piano synth that reminds me of “Moment for Life”.  If there’s one track you should listen to, pick this one. A+
